In the Area
Inside Linden's Bridge and Broad Historic District, the Historic District Commission must approve plans for construction, addition, alteration, or repair before the city's building inspector can issue a permit. A Certificate of Appropriateness costs $50 on the 2026-27 fee schedule, and the application is due 14 days before the quarterly meeting. A missed deadline pushes an application to the next meeting. The guidelines call it inappropriate to replace a metal, slate, or tile roof with asphalt shingles.

Questions
We offer roof repair, roof replacement, siding, window replacement, deck building, storm damage repair, and siding repair.
The Historic District Commission's design guidelines say replacement windows should match the original in size and number of panes, and that windows that do not match the original are inappropriate. They also say original wood siding should be retained and that a replacement should match its style. The Commission decides each case.
The city's 2026-27 fee schedule charges $75 for a permit on work valued up to $10,000, with one inspection included, and $75 for each additional inspection. Work done without the required permit adds a $100 unpermitted-work charge to the permit fee. Card payments carry a 3 percent processing fee, with a $2 minimum.
For the permit fee only, the city's fee schedule values a deck at $21 per square foot, which is not what a deck costs to build, and runs that value through the permit fee table. For a new deck, work valued up to $10,000 falls in the $75 tier, which includes one inspection.
The City of Linden requires a $50 point-of-sale housing inspection before a home sale closes. The city's housing code, which dates from 2011 or earlier, says the roof must be tight and have no defects that admit water, with windows weathertight. A leak calls for roof repair work, and windows that are not weathertight call for replacement windows. The checklist asks for no leaks and no open or expired permits, so either can come up at a sale.
