In the Area
Replacing windows or siding in the City of Flushing needs a city building permit, and so does putting on a new roof. The city's fee schedule effective October 2019 charges a $39 administrative fee and $9.50 per $1,000 of construction value, and $27 more if zoning review is needed. Flushing Charter Township is a separate government with its own permit office and fees, so the city's fees do not apply to a township address.

Questions
We offer roof repair, roof replacement, siding, window replacement, deck building, storm damage repair, and siding repair.
The City of Flushing's 2017 roofing guide allows a maximum of two layers of roofing. It says the old roofing has to come off down to the wood under the shingles when there are already two or more layers, when the roofing is water-soaked, or when asphalt shingles have been exposed to moderate or severe hail. When the old roofing has to come off completely, the project becomes a full roof replacement, not a patch.
Flushing Charter Township's June 2026 permit application lists a $45 application fee and a $60 inspection at the end of the project. The permit fee has a $70 minimum and is figured from the cost of construction. Starting work without the permit doubles the permit fee and stops the project until the permit is issued, according to the township's zoning ordinance.
The city's guide says combination storm and screen windows, and replacing a broken pane of glass, do not need a building permit. Replacing whole windows does, and the permit comes with its fee. Siding work needs a permit too, with its own inspection of the water barrier behind the siding and another inspection at the end of the project.
Trained spotters and an airplane pilot reported hail from 1.25 to 2 inches in size just east of Flushing on August 28, 2020, according to National Weather Service storm reports. After hail that size, look from the ground at the gutters and downspouts for dents.
