Exterior Work in a Flint Historic District
Homes inside one of the city's locally designated historic districts need approval from the Historic District Commission before exterior work such as a new roof or new siding starts. The Commission's 2025 application form says work cannot begin until the historic district, zoning, and building permits are all in place. The Commission's page lists a $20 review fee for a home. Get the Commission's approval before you order materials that change how the house looks.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
We offer roof repair, roof replacement, siding, window replacement, deck building, storm damage repair, and siding repair.
That depends on the Historic District Commission, which decides each case on its own. In June 2021 it approved replacing the roof only with an amendment of no vinyl siding and the use of wood shingles or wood boards, and it approved like-for-like roof materials as submitted at two other addresses.
Yes, the city's fee schedule for the 2026-27 budget year lists removal of aluminum siding as its own line under new-roof and new-siding permits, at $160. The other new-roof and new-siding permit fees are set by the value of the project.
The National Weather Service recorded a 63 mph thunderstorm gust at Flint Bishop Airport on August 27, 2024. After wind like that, look from the ground for broken, missing, or curling shingles and loose flashing at the roof edges, which the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety lists as signs of wind damage on an asphalt shingle roof. Binoculars let you check without climbing onto the roof.
