In the Area
Birch Run has two permit offices with different fee tables. The Village's fee form was revised in January 2026 and the Township's fee form dates from February 2025. At every price level the Township charges $50 more than the Village, starting at $100 in the Township and $50 in the Village for work up to $500. Your address decides which table prices your permit.

Questions
We offer roof repair, roof replacement, siding, window replacement, deck building, storm damage repair, and siding repair.
The building permit fee in both the Village and the Township is based on the cost of construction, which each office works out from a standard building cost table when you submit the application. The applicant may also be asked for a signed copy of the contract to verify the cost of the project. Plan review adds 65 percent of the permit fee when plans have to be submitted.
The Village and Township permit offices both ask for a $400 surety deposit before a permit for a residential structure, alteration, or addition, and $200 for a garage or shed. Under the Township's 2020 resolution, the deposit is held until the inspections are done and returned less any re-inspection fees. A re-inspection costs $100 in both offices.
Birch Run Township's zoning ordinance asks for a zoning permit before a deck is built, ahead of any building permit. The Township's 2020 application packet lists a $65 zoning permit fee, and the Village's separate July 2026 form lists $45. Under the ordinance as amended in 2020, an unroofed, unenclosed deck may come as close as 5 feet to a side or rear lot line.
Yes, the National Weather Service logged hailstones up to 2 inches wide in Birch Run on September 2, 2026, from spotter and public reports with photos. The Weather Service calls hail an inch or larger severe and says it can damage roofs. From the ground, look for dents or spatter marks on gutters, downspouts, and metal flashing, which can help confirm a hail event.
